I had a similar prob with my Xbox not reading games and not recognizing the DVD playback kit, MS support was pretty good. They practically gave me a RA number after two or three calls. Even scored a free memory unit when I returned it to Grace Bros!

If you want to get some action see if you can call MS head office and find out MS Australia's CEO's name. Write him a letter explaining your disatisfaction and the steps already taken, very simialr to what you have written here. Believe me this kind of stuff works, often the CEO has a special compliant handling protocol that is followed up by fairly senior business, rather than operation, staff - the kind that can easily make a replacement decision.

Forget about customer service if they can't help you the first time, they sit behind a computer screen and read from comments other agents have recorded from converstaions with you and may be able to view service logs and they take no part whatsoever in fix your box.

Trust me on this one. I am only a product manager for another company but if I said give $$$$ of product away for free "as a gesture of good will" it would be done. Forget about operations go to the business side and talk to head office, go first to the CEO and then see what happens.

Let me know how it goes.

People are talking about this problem being fixed if switched to 60Hz. The XBox has the options to change frequency so it should work fine on both 50 and 60. If they told me just change it to 60 and it will work fine I would be mighty pissed off still as you bought a machine that should work with all the functions it provides. This will be completely crap for people who have TVs that can't support 60Hz video quality (what are they meant to do, play with it all stuffed up).

I would demand (as you are) for it to be perfect).

Sh!t, I just got my Xbox today. So far, everything has worked fine except for one problem. I was playing Halo, and the game exited to the dashboard and said it couldn't read the CD. I re-loaded the game and it worked fine (I was playing Halo for about 8+ hours straight, so..).

Whoa. Incompetant Goon. That is really bad. Sounds as though your boX might have the same problems as mine and Monkeys.

Monitor it. If you want to be sure, do the DOA3 test.

...I don't know that this is worth getting all paranoid over. What if its just a gamebug in Rallisport and DOA3? I know FOR SURE that my Rallisport jitters/slideshows @ the opening movie when in 50hz mode. Just about EVERYONE I talk to says the same thing. Putting it in 60hz fixes it.

That sounds like a gamebug rather than a console fault. The fact that the same thing happens with DOA3 makes me think its a gamebug once again. The fact that this has occured on both my launch day Xbox, and another new unit (replacement, not just repaird) also says to me its a gamebug.

I can understand people wanting a console that doesn't scratch your disks, as there are reports of systems out there that don't do it. I on the other hand have found both my NTSC, and my PAL Xbox scratch disks. The disks still play fine.

I have also experienced the Halo dropping back to the dashboard problem once (on my NTSC unit). Thats not enough to worry me. I have had the "this disk is not recognised" error too, just eject and replace the disk and its fine. Most of these problems were/are experienced occasionally by many people I know with US/AUS models too, but when in 60hz mode they are rare and infrequent.

I am not trying to say that you shouldn't keep up your quest to get new units (Monkey and Elf), keep it up. If you ever find the holy grail of perfect units let me know...I am just saying I find the problems to be reasonable for launch game bugs, and the 50hz mode causing movie playback problems also makes sense to me.

Syama - So in closing, I'll just say Good luck.

PS: Elf, does running your xbox in 60hz mode still give you problems with the DOA3 ending movies?

It doesn't seem as though you have completely read through my log Msyama. I have tried both 50Hz and 60Hz options, and it is the same - same problems.

It happens extremely frequently to me. Many other people post saying that it doesn't happen to them - no problems at all.

I am not imagining this. My Xbox unit has a serious fault that impacts gameplay regularly. If this is 'normal' (which I don't believe it is), then I am not interested in Xbox (even though it has the best games). Honestly Msyama, read through my log, and the frequency of the problems, and tell me that you would put up with that?

I wouldn't worry to much, the first time I took Halo for a 10 hours spin the same thing happened to me, that has been the only problem I have had with my machine apart from some scratches on Halo.

I must have got a good piece of hardware for a change. I haven't had any problems with my Xbox yet, *touch wood*, it doesn't scratch disks either (and I've given it a good workout). It seems to be the luck of the draw nowadays as consoles become more complex.

I don't actually have DOA3, but I might be buying it next week. If the problem happens again I'll start to take action.

That's good to hear. Hopefully it never happens to me again either.

With my first post, I was simply passing on my experience with my xbox(s) on that one problem I quoted....I wasn't disagreeing that you have a faulty system.

With my 2nd post I was simply putting forward an idea...as I don't know why the problems occur...all I know is that 60 hz seems to be the answer to most of my PAL Xbox problems and that scratching/"unknown disk" errors appear on all 3 xboxes I have ever had. So, all the power to you finding out what your problems are.

And for you sonic, I only have one thing to say. "Svideo is better than component" LOL!

Syama

With all this recent talk about faulty xboxs I was really worried that my xbox might be faulty, happy to say that nothing weird has occured whilst playing hired games DOA3 and Dave mirra BMX (hey, they had nothing else in).

Good luck Elf

i had the same problem with DOA3

infact i went through 3 copies before the 4th final worked........and the 4th still breaks down every now and again, some of the ending movies don't play and character models don't load up in the selection screen also sometimes text is dissorted

but i'am living with it because i've had enough

it makes me think that DOA3 is faulty for sure but with your case it seems your xbox is also faulty just pure unlucky
